Bringing a new life into the world is a joyous, challenging and miraculous experience! However, a Mother to be may feel worried, anxious or stressed. Her body undergoes many changes, which can cause discomfort. Massage is a perfect way to reduce stress and promote wellbeing.
Massage during pregnancy is not intended to replace the care provided by your Doctor or Midwife. However, I can work in collaboration with them to provide additional physical and emotional support.
I also include specific exercise suggestions to provide Holistic care.
The massage uses a mixture of Swedish Body Massage and Shiatsu techniques. It is performed either on a massage table or a futon depending on the stage of pregnancy and the preference of the Mother. The Mother is in a side lying position, with cushions used to support her ‘bump’ and pelvis, and covered with a large sheet. Only the area being massaged at the time is uncovered.
In late pregnancy, or to treat specific back pain, the back can be massaged whilst the mother leans over a Pilate’s ball. Also, from around 38 weeks, specific pressure points can be stimulated to prepare the mother for labour.
I use unperfumed organic Tui waxes to massage with, which are safe for both Mother and Baby.
